Notes: Originally written for a winter writing competition at Ashley's page. Translation to English is product of ten minutes of work, so it may be a little rough.
It was already evening when Thany and Tate arrived at Edessa to spend the end of the year with Yuno and her family. The trip was basically peaceful. Only Thany had still not come to terms with being an aunt, and she complained about that fact for the entire journey. Tate barely registered her. Her thoughts have returned several months into the past.
She tried to find the reason behind the last words of Brenya, the last of the Three Wyvern Lords of Bern kingdom, „I wanted to experience Christmas for one more time...“
Tate never heard a word like Christmas. She didn’t know what it is. The one thing she knew was that Brenya deserved someone to honor her memory. And what was better thing to do to honor her memory, than finding the reason behind her last words?
Reunion with Yuno was pleasant, and her small daughter was really adorable, but Edessa still beared scars from the fierce battle, that was fought for it not even a year ago. Tate shivered when she saw the rock cliffs from which ballista bolts rained upon their army. In the end everything worked out, but it didn’t mean that Tate liked to remember it.
Luckily she didn’t have to think about it for a long time, because she was still consumed by the problem of what exactly is Christmas. She asked Yuno, but even she did not know. The only idea they had was that they could ask Niime, the legendary witch of the mountains of Ilia.

Unfortunately, it was not easy to find Niime. In the end they found her on the twenty fifth day of the last month of the year. When they asked her what is Christmas she just grinned, and started a long narration.
„The Christmas are an ancient holiday – from the time of Eight Heroes. They celebrate the birth of Saint Elimine, so they were celebrated only in the lands where her church stayed strong. These days only people of Bern celebrate them. They do it by cutting down a young tree, and bringing it home. There they hang lots of various jingly thingies on it. Today, the entire family gathers around it, they sing ancient songs, and eat cookies they prepared beforehand...“
Niime continued in naming traditions that made absolutely no sense to the three sisters. They did not understand why to make such fuss about birth of Saint Elimine. After all a thousand years have passed since. Their feelings were probably best expressed by Thany, „It would be better to go ice skating.“
They left Niime to her monologue and returned to Edessa. They ice skated for the entire rest of the day, and came to an agreement, that it a much better way to spend time, than singing songs around a tree. Yuno was exceptionally glad, because she knew that her sisters had terrible singing voice.
When Niime ended her tradition naming five days later, and found out that her audience had ran away, she got angry and threw a small avalanche on Edessa. The fact, that she helped to save the world doesn’t mean she’s a nice person.
